It photographs beautifully across nearly every season, which makes it a strong option no matter when your engagement is happening.
Best Seasons to Shoot at the Arboretum
Spring brings Dallas Blooms, with hundreds of thousands of tulips and other spring flowers transforming the garden into one of the most colorful photography backdrops in the entire state. It’s stunning, but also the busiest season, so early booking and early arrival matter.
Fall brings the Autumn at the Arboretum display along with cooler, more comfortable temperatures and warm, golden afternoon light. I consider this the sweet spot for a lot of couples, offering beautiful color without the peak season crowds of spring.
Winter is quieter still, with a softer, more minimal palette and holiday decor in certain areas during the season.
Summer, on the other hand, is the season I most often recommend avoiding, and it’s worth explaining exactly why.

Texas summers are no joke, and I steer nearly every couple away from shooting outdoor sessions, including at the Arboretum, on the hottest days of the year. Extreme heat and humidity don’t just make you uncomfortable, they visibly affect your photos. Humidity causes hair to frizz and lose its shape within minutes, and makeup tends to break down and slide much faster in high heat. On top of the physical effects, extreme heat also impacts mood. It’s genuinely hard to feel romantic and relaxed with your partner when you’re overheated and uncomfortable, and that tension has a way of showing up in candid moments. If summer is your only option, we’ll plan around an early morning session to minimize the impact of the heat as much as possible.
Best Times of Day at the Arboretum
Two windows consistently produce the best results for Arboretum sessions. Early morning, particularly in summer when the sun doesn’t set until around 8 p.m., gives soft, even light and a quieter garden before crowds build up. The hour before closing, especially after the time change in fall, gives you that low, golden, romantic light that photographers chase all year, along with a much thinner crowd since most day visitors have already left.
Parking for Your Arboretum Session
I recommend parking in the garage on Garland Road near Walton’s Garden Center. Starting your session from that entrance lets us begin at the front of the garden and move backward through the property in a natural, unhurried flow, rather than jumping around or backtracking through crowds.
Arboretum Admission and Session Fees
The Dallas Arboretum charges a $25 per person admission fee to enter the garden, which applies to you, your partner, and anyone else joining the session. When you book your engagement session with me, I add a $25 photographer entry fee to your invoice as well, so it’s worth budgeting for both when planning a session at this location.
